I have had an interest in photography for much of my life. It spans a former career in television, where I worked as a cameraman and video editor, but also many years spent simply photographing landscapes for pleasure, something I was doing long before I became a landscape architect.

I was interested in light and shadow, movement and composition, and in what makes the composition of a natural place beautiful. When I later encountered landscape architecture, I became fascinated by many of the same relationships: light and dark, hard and soft, open and enclosed, what is made and what is natural, and how these things can be composed and controlled to shape our experience of a place.

I think that interest in photography, composition and light has inevitably fed into the way I design landscapes.
